The conference “Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. Science and Law at the Service of Citizens”, promoted by Senator Raffaele De Rosa and organized by the Center for Advanced Studies on Artificial Intelligence (CSAIA), brought together academics, legal experts, and healthcare managers to discuss the opportunities and critical issues related to the use of AI in healthcare systems.
The proceedings were opened by Pier Paolo Maria Menchetti (EU Commission/EMA Thematic Panel, Ettore Majorana Foundation, President of CSAIA), who emphasized the importance of integrating technological innovation, science, and law in order to build sustainable digital healthcare systems.
Among the main speakers, Massimo Midiri (University of Palermo) highlighted the role of AI in the management of chronic diseases and in supporting clinical decision-making. Don Andrea Ciucci (Pontifical Academy for Life) addressed the ethical implications of technology in medicine, reaffirming the centrality of the human person.
Emanuele Buratti (ICGEB) illustrated the applications of artificial intelligence in biomedical research and in the study of neurodegenerative diseases. Maurizio Nardi (Health Telematic Network) presented experiences related to telemedicine and remote patient monitoring.
From a legal perspective, Raffaella Scotti (University of Naples Federico II) analyzed the issue of medical liability in the use of AI systems, while Suany Mazzitelli (LexisNexis Observatory de légistique) outlined the European regulatory framework and the regulation of health data.
The issue of cybersecurity was addressed by Ranieri Razzante (University of Perugia), who highlighted the growing cybersecurity risks within the healthcare sector. Franca Camplone (Federmanager Abruzzo and Molise) contributed the perspective of healthcare management within digital transformation processes.
Oliva Salviati presented the recovery project of the San Giacomo in Augusta Hospital in Rome, while Vivado Moscatelli emphasized the importance of digital skills and European professional certification programs.
The conclusions of the conference highlighted that artificial intelligence represents a decisive transformation for the future of healthcare, but requires a multidisciplinary approach integrating technological innovation, data security, education, and an appropriate regulatory framework.
The shared objective is to develop a digital healthcare ecosystem capable of improving prevention, diagnosis, and quality of care while maintaining the protection of citizens at its core.
